Rip Curl Groms Dominate the Field at the Still Frothy Surf Festival, Pismo Beach
The 3rd Annual Billabong Still Frothy Surf Festival went off in Pismo Beach, CA with overhead surf and a stacked field of competitors. Rip Curl groms Trevor Thornton, 17 (San Clemente), and Pat Curren, 16 (Santa Barbara) made the trek north to compete in multiple divisions against California's best surfers.
On the first day of the 2-day event, Trevor and Pat surfed in their own age division, the 17 & Under Juniors. The two surfers went blow for blow against each other, while advancing heat after heat. On this day Trevor was the stand out as he won all four of his heats including the final, scoring an impressive 17 points, to Pat's 16 point heat total. Trevor took down first place and a $500 check and Pat stood strong in 2nd.
The Rip Curl groms were also invited to compete in the 2-man team Tow-At Airshow, which fielded California's best aerialists. Surfers were given 10 minutes to perform in the empty lineup to display their best air-game using Jet Ski assist. Pat went first and pulled off a clean, stylish reverse, as well as a huge roundhouse cutback to airdrop. Trevor was next and landed a handful of straight airs and air-reveres. Although the duo didn't win, they gained valuable experience and had a blast doing it!
Finally, in the Pro-Am division, the groms faced up against the older boys to give their best shot for the big prize purse. Trevor went down fighting in the quarterfinals, however Pat fought hard all the way to a 4th place overall finish and $150! Pat displayed a wide-array of front side carves and backside tail blasts proving talent beyond his years, as he was the youngest competitor in the final. The finalists included, 1st Cody Thompson, 2nd Torrey Meister, 3rd Johnny Craft, 5th place Austin Smith-Ford, and 6th was Tyler Payne.
The groms left Pismo stoked, sun burnt, and ready to return next year for the Still Frothy Festival. A special thanks goes out to Central California legend Walt Cerney for the invitation to compete and putting on a great event.
